HI,I took my second dose of MTX last Sat. and yesterday I noticed a slighly red, itchy rash on my lower arms and I wondered if this could be a side effect of the drug.Sad I have been out in the sun and only my lower arms were exposed to sunshine. This morning it's a sort of bumpy rash but not so red.Not sure if I should have a word with my GP incase it is to do with the MTX. Any ideas if it could be that.Brenda.

Hi Melly, I rang my GP about the rash and he wanted to see me straight away so I've just got back from the surgery. He had a good look at the rash and said I needed a blood test urgently so he got the surgery nurse to do it and hopefully I will get the results tomorrow as I go on holiday on Monday and I want to get it sorted before I go.I did get some cream from the chemist to help stop the itching and my GP said that was OK to use.My next dose of MTX is on Sat. so if the blood tests are OK I guess I will continue taking it as I don't see the rheumy nurse until June 7th.Depending on the result of the blood test she may tell me to stop taking it.I've only been on it for two weeks so perhaps it's started to recact in my system. Sad Brenda.

I hope you get a diagnosis tomorrow Brenda and that it isn't the methotrexate. If you don't get the results tomorrow - I would definitely skip the metho before you go on holiday. Are you going abroad?

Hi Julie,We are holidaying in our caravan in Somerset, luckily not going abroad so it's not too bad.Don't think I'd want to travel overseas not knowing if the MTX is causing this rash.I also take Hydroxy and havn't had any trouble with that, although that's quite a mild drug compared to MTX. Brenda.

Hi Brenda

Sorry this has happened. Really hope this is just the effect of the combo of sun + mtx and not adverse reaction to mtx.

Take care and please let us know how it goes.

Love Jeanxxxx

Hi Julie,Last weekend which was very hot,I spent Sat. and Sun. out in the sun.Not sun bathing just walking out and about and my arms were exposed to the sun from the elbows down to the wrists and that's where the rash is.It does remind me of nettle rash. The cream I'm using for the itching is good, gets rid of the itching but hasn't reduced the rash.I'm on 15mg of MTX and have so far taken two doses. That was my starting dose so hope they don't increase yet.Sad Brenda.

Hi Brenda,

Hope your rash settles down soon.
I find I need a higher factor sun cream now than I used before I was on mtx, it does make you more sensitive to the sun.

Oh what a shame and a scare for you but best checked out properly.

MTX does react to sun, probably need to cover arms with thin cotton and wear tons of cream.....

Love,

Amanda

Hi Brenda,

I was on the triple therapy MTX, HYDROX, SULPH, In the beginning, I came out in a rash which spread, I was advised to stop all drugs and then re-introduce them again slowly. I have not had a problem since. Think it may have been a shock to my system to take so many at once. Hope you get sorted out before your holiday. Lorna x

Hi,Just an update on my rash and MTX.My GP phoned me this afternoon and said my blood test was fine but that I was to stop taking the MTX and Folic Acid until I see the rheumy nurse on June 7th.He thinks the rash is probably caused by the sun interacting with the drug, although he said he can't be absolutely sure.I've got some cream to put on to stop the itching and he said if I do go out in the sun, to wear a factor 50 sunscreen. It was a relief to know the bloods were OK although I had only taken two doses of MTX.So now I'm just taking two Hydroxy a day but no doubt something else will be added when I see the nurse.Don't think I'll be sitting out in the sun while I'm on holiday! Hope you all enjoy the Bank Holiday. Brenda. x Smile

Hi Melly,The cream has eased the itching but the arms are still covered in the little bumps so don't think I will be wearing anything with short sleeves while I'm on holiday! Not sure how long it takes for the rash to go.If I've still got it after my hols I will make an appointment to see my GP again as he may give me a stronger cream to use. It's cooler here today and rain is forcast so won't be any probs with the sun on my skin.Like you said,if it is the meds that has caused it,they will still be in my system so it will be best to stay out of the sun. Love BrendaSmile

Hi everyone,Well the rash on my arms has gone thankgoodness but I've still got sore itchy eyes. When I mentioned it to the rheumy nurse on Monday she said it's probably due to the arthritis and suggested I use some artificial eye drops. The consultant has dropped my MTX from 15mg to 7.5 and the Folic Acid from three to two, although he doesn't think the MTX caused the rash.He did say if the rash returns while I'm on the lower dose of MTX then I have to let the rheumy nurse know.I will be starting on the lower dose this weekend so fingers crossed!
Can anyone tell me difference between RA and inflammatory arthritis?I have RA and OA but the nurse said it's inflammatory arthritis that's probably giving me the sore eyes.Is that the same as RA? so confusing.Confused Got to have my annual eye test tomorrow so that may show up something. Brenda.

Yes Brenda, RA is otherwise known as inflammatory arthritis.
Glad your rash has cleared up and I hope the drops help your sore eyes.

Love, Doreen xx
